CDPH sexual health clinics (free)
The Chicago Department of Public Health provides free STI testing and treatment, PrEP information, and condoms at three sexual health clinics:

Walk-ins are accepted based on availability, but CDPH cannot accommodate walk-ins at every location and asks patients to call for an appointment. Rapid HIV results are available during the visit; lab results take several days.

Between CDPH, the CORE Center, and Howard Brown, Chicago has more free and low-cost walk-in capacity than most cities. The trade-off is still time: waits and several-day lab results versus a 5-minute private lab visit with results in 1 to 2 days.
Urgent care in Chicago
Urgent care centers are dense across the city and suburbs, and most offer STD testing with an exam. Without insurance, plan on a visit fee of $100 to $200 plus lab charges, with results in 2 to 5 days. Some run rapid HIV on site. The right choice if you have symptoms and want treatment today.
Illinois notes
- Minors aged 12 and older can consent to their own STD testing and treatment in Illinois.
- Expedited partner therapy is allowed in Illinois for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.
- Suburban county clinics: DuPage County’s sexual health clinic in Wheaton serves the western suburbs (see the Naperville page); Cook County residents outside the city can use the CDPH clinics or private labs.
When to test
Chlamydia and gonorrhea at 2 weeks after exposure, HIV and syphilis at 6 weeks, herpes antibody at 12 weeks. With symptoms, test now and retest after the window.
Which tests to order
The 10-test panel ($139) covers HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes 1 and 2, and hepatitis A, B, and C. After one known exposure, chlamydia and gonorrhea together ($99) at two weeks and HIV plus syphilis ($49 each) at six weeks is a reasonable minimum.
Testing with a partner in Chicago
A lot of people get tested as a couple, at the start of a relationship or before stopping condoms. It works the same way as testing alone, just twice: each of you places your own order, so each of you gets your own private results, then you can walk into the same lab together and be done in about ten minutes.
- Same tests, same day. Ordering the same panel for both of you keeps the results easy to compare. The 10-test panel is the usual choice; add trichomoniasis if you have vaginal sex.
- Results are individual. Neither of you can see the other's results unless you share them, which is worth agreeing on before you test.
- If one of you tests positive, treat both of you at the same time for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis, even if the other person tested negative, or the infection passes back and forth. Retest in 3 months.
- A positive result is not proof of recent cheating. Chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes, and HPV can go unnoticed for months or years.
