San Francisco has one of the best public sexual health clinics in the country and private walk-in labs across the city, the East Bay, Marin, and the Peninsula, so rapid STD testing in San Francisco is a question of free-and-wait versus fast-and-private. This page lists every walk-in lab in San Francisco, Daly City, San Mateo, Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, Hayward, San Rafael, and the surrounding towns with hours, plus City Clinic. For the South Bay, see the San Jose page.

The fastest option: order online, walk into a lab today

Private lab draw sites are located downtown and in Lower Nob Hill along Post and Sutter Streets, in the Castro on Noe and 15th Streets, in the Mission on Valencia Street, in Japantown and the Fillmore on Webster Street, in Pacific Heights on Pacific Avenue, and along Ocean Avenue, with more in Daly City, Millbrae, San Mateo, Foster City, Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, San Leandro, Castro Valley, Hayward, San Rafael, Greenbrae, Larkspur, Mill Valley, and Lafayette. Order online, walk in with no appointment, spend about 5 minutes, and get results in 1 to 2 days in a private account. Nothing is billed to insurance and nothing goes on your medical record.

Most sites open at 6 or 7 a.m. on weekdays and several open Saturday mornings. The full list with hours is below.

San Francisco City Clinic

  • Address: 356 7th St, San Francisco, CA 94103 (SoMa, between Folsom and Harrison)
  • Hours: Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday 1:00 to 6:00 p.m.; Thursday 8:00 to 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
  • Walk-ins accepted, but the clinic closes to new walk-in patients once it reaches the day’s capacity, so arrive early. Appointments and questions: 628-217-6600.
  • Cost: free. Ages 12 and up; no San Francisco residency, insurance, or ID required.
  • Services: STI and HIV testing and treatment, PrEP, PEP, and doxy-PEP

Rapid HIV results are available during the visit; lab results take several days. City Clinic is the right choice if cost is the barrier or you need PEP after a high-risk exposure.

Urgent care in San Francisco

Urgent care centers in SoMa, the Marina, the Castro, the Sunset, and downtown offer STD testing with an exam. Without insurance, plan on a visit fee of $150 or more plus lab charges, with results in 2 to 5 days.

California notes

  • Minors aged 12 and older can consent to their own STD testing and treatment confidentially.
  • Expedited partner therapy is permitted in California for chlamydia, gonorrhea, and trichomoniasis.
  • Visitors: private testing has no residency requirement; order online, walk in, and read results after you fly home.

When to test

Chlamydia and gonorrhea at 2 weeks after exposure, HIV and syphilis at 6 weeks, herpes antibody at 12 weeks. With symptoms, test now and retest after the window.

Which tests to order

The 10-test panel ($139) covers the common infections in one visit. After one known exposure, chlamydia and gonorrhea together ($99) at two weeks and HIV plus syphilis ($49 each) at six weeks is a reasonable minimum. After oral or receptive anal exposure, ask City Clinic or another clinic for throat and rectal swabs, since a urine test only detects genital infection.

Testing with a partner in San Francisco

A lot of people get tested as a couple, at the start of a relationship or before stopping condoms. It works the same way as testing alone, just twice: each of you places your own order, so each of you gets your own private results, then you can walk into the same lab together and be done in about ten minutes.

  • Same tests, same day. Ordering the same panel for both of you keeps the results easy to compare. The 10-test panel is the usual choice; add trichomoniasis if you have vaginal sex.
  • Results are individual. Neither of you can see the other's results unless you share them, which is worth agreeing on before you test.
  • If one of you tests positive, treat both of you at the same time for chlamydia, gonorrhea, or trichomoniasis, even if the other person tested negative, or the infection passes back and forth. Retest in 3 months.
  • A positive result is not proof of recent cheating. Chlamydia, trichomoniasis, herpes, and HPV can go unnoticed for months or years.
